Before the tournament I made wholesale predictions leading up to a Spain win over Holland in the final. Obviously some of the round of 16 matchups are different than I anticipated, so I figured I’d give them another shot — while maintaining the integrity of my original picks, of course.
* * *
Uruguay over South Korea — I didn’t have either of these teams advancing, so I’ll side with the South Americans. CONMEBOL has been unstoppable and Uruguay has looked especially sharp.
United States over Ghana — I picked our guys to make the quarterfinals and I’m not jumping ship now. I actually think in the run of play we’ve looked better than expected.
England over Germany — I had expected this matchup here, though with England winning the group and Germany as a runner-up. I’m sticking with the original pick, but not thrilled about it.
Argentina over Mexico — Originally both these teams were in the quarterfinals for me, but I picked Maradona’s side to go further. They’ve also looked like unstoppable so far, Messi especially.
Holland over Slovakia — The guys in orange were my pick to go to the title game. While I don’t think they’ve shown that kind of form, I’m confident they’ll get past this one.
Chile over Brazil — This was my surprise pick of my first predictions and I can’t turn my back on it now. I’m actually encouraged this can still happen after watching group play.
Japan over Paraguay — The hardest pick for my of this round (flip a coin?). I didn’t think Japan would advance, but they might have been the biggest surprise to me so far. This could go to PKs.
Spain over Portgual — La Furia Roja is my championship pick so they get the call here. Not sure what this game will bring since both teams have been up and down so far.
