Seattle’s Offense Stalls in Home Loss to Rush
Seattle Sounders Women 0:1 Colorado Rush
SoundersWomen.com – Despite controlling possession for much of the second half, the Sounders Women were left on the doorstep of earning points after falling to the visiting Colorado Rush 1:0.
“The urgency was there, but it was after we went down one nothing,” said Seattle head coach Leighton O’Brien.
“We controlled the game, I felt, for the most part,” said Sounders Women goalkeeper Katie Hultin. “We just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.”
Colorado drew blood five minutes into the second half to ink the game’s lone goal into the scorer’s book when Rush midfielder Kellyn Farrell, by the right post, brought in a cross coming off a throw-in from the near right sideline and poked it low past Seattle’s Hultin into the far corner of the net.
“No one covered me, so I just went to the goal and poked it in with my toe real fast,” said Farrell.
“Terrible goal we gave up,” said O’Brien, Seattle’s head coach.
The goal was her first on the season.
Down early in the second half, Seattle (1-2-5) sought to feed forward Justi Baumgardt-Yamada, but Colorado (2-0-3) staked out the former United States National Team player wherever she went, leaving Seattle with possession, but stuck in neutral.
“They were tight on us,” said Baumgardt-Yamada. “We weren’t able to get balls in and get in behind.”
Seattle had an opportunity to get on the board first, but four rapid-fire shots coming in the ninth minute of the game got deflected, the first two by teammates and the final ones by Colorado goalkeeper Krissy Tribbett and a Rush defender.
“We had four cleared off the line,” said Seattle’s O’Brien. “It’s just – I don’t know, it just didn’t bounce our way.”
