RSL forward Alvaro Saborio named MLS Player of the Week

Very tough choice this week, but it had to be someone from Salt Lake after a 5-0 drubbing of New England, right? I actually gave my vote to RSL defender Robbie Russell, who I thought had a bigger impact in the win by setting up a couple goals extremely well.

Real Salt Lake Forward Alvaro Saborio Voted MLS Player of the Week

Saborio records two goals in 5-0 win over New England Revolution; helps Salt Lake to club-record nine-game unbeaten streak

NEW YORK (July 5, 2010) – Real Salt Lake forward Alvaro Saborio was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 14 of the 2010 MLS season. Saborio tallied two goals in Salt Lake’s 5-0 win over the New England at Rio Tinto Stadium on Friday, extending the team’s undefeated streak to nine games in League play.

With Salt Lake leading 2-0 in the 52nd minute, the Costa Rican international added RSL’s third goal of the night. Having stepped in front of his defender in the six-yard box, Saborio pounced on teammate Robbie Russell’s perfectly placed ball from the right wing. With his first touch, he poked the ball into the upper right corner, past goalkeeper Matt Reis, for his sixth goal of the season.

Despite the lead, Salt Lake continued to attack and just five minutes later Saborio put away his second goal of the game. In the 57th minute, Javier Morales drove a low ball across the box, through defensive traffic, and Saborio steered the ball into the net with with a backheel shot.

This is Saborio’s second career MLS Player of the Week award. The 28-year-old first earned the honor in Week 8 of this season after scoring twice in a May 13 defeat of the Houston Dynamo. Saborio went on to collect the Player of the Month award for May.

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
