Sounders FC 1, Celtic 2 — postgame Neil Lennon quotes

NEIL LENNON, Celtic head coach

(On impressions of the game) “A lot of pleasing performances. Hooiveld, Misun, McCourt, Hinkel, Ferry. It was a really worthwhile exercise. I’m pleased we won as well. I thought we should’ve won the game more comfortably. Disappointed with the goal we conceded, but overall pleased with the work rate we’ve got.”

(On the red card) “I thought the referee should’ve just let the goal stand as it was and common sense prevails, you know? But I think he had already made the decision to give the penalty and with the laws of the game, the goalkeeper unfortunately had to go. Sometimes it’s worthwhile playing against 10 men to see how we adapt, but probably would’ve preferred 11v11.”

(On his squad and how they’ve progressed) “OK, they’re improving. We had to bring a big squad with us because of the heavy schedule. We had a hard game on Friday night against Manchester United in Toronto, then we had to travel straight after the game. So you have to take into consideration the fatigue element and obviously you have to watch for lingering injuries. Thankfully we’ve (only) picked up a couple but should be OK. We still have one more game to go and the guys that didn’t play today should get a run in that.”

(On MLS) “Good standard. I think the American players, I like their temperament. I like their professionalism as well. They’re all very athletic and I’m pretty surprised by the level of technical ability the majority of them have showed in the couple of game that we’ve played them.”

(On Efrain Juarez) “He needed to go back and sort out his visa. Hopefully we can get him back as quickly as possible. Hopefully he’ll join us next week. We’ve been watching him, even before the World Cup, we were aware of him. We watched him in a couple of friendlies before the World Cup and he obviously did very well in the World Cup. He was very impressive. I like his style of play. I think he’ll fit the style of Scotland and I think he’ll be a good asset for us to have. We needed to get the balance better in the midfield area and I think he’ll increase the quality of that.”
