Sounders FC 2, Colorado Rapids 1 — Seattle player quotes

STEVE ZAKUANI, midfielder

(On the result) “It’s just good to get a win. To be honest, I think Colorado controlled the game. We did a lot of running out there, but I think we fought well as a team. It was disappointing when we scored the first one they came straight back, but we did a second goal, didn’t make the same mistake twice. It was a very good team win tonight.”

(On the two goals) “This first one I initially took a bad touch, I think it was Sturgis or Alonso who played it to me. But Fredy was coming up and it was a bit of ping-pong in the box and the ball fell to me. It was about getting a quick release and I did. I maybe got a bit lucky, it came off his back, but I take it as it comes. The second one, great combination with Fredy and Sanna out wide, I just made a run and Sanna picked me out and it’s an easy tap-in. I was happy to get both goals.”

(On urgency to get back in the playoff mix) “We said that before, I don’t think we’re going to win every game from here on out. I don’t think anyone will, but it’s a case of we’ve been in every game we’ve played this year and we’ve been losing them. Now what we’re doing is turning those into wins. At D.C., we’re 0-0 for 85 minutes, we get the win. Tonight we didn’t play great, but we get the win. We just have to keep going I think. You see the momentum of the team, people are confident now. We’re using our squad a lot, you saw Jaqua came on, Seamon came on, Blaise made his first start so we’ve great a very deep squad. We’ve got to use that. It’s a very tough league of course, MLS, but the last two wins have been big for us. We just have to keep winning.”

KASEY KELLER, goalkeeper

(The difference from loss at Colorado) “In the first game we just let Conor Casey did whatever he wanted. He just turned on us and collected everything. Today I felt Pat and Jeff did a tremendous job making sure that everything he got he earned. They hit him a couple of times because you know Conor is going to hit you, so you’ve got to play hard against him. I still think he’s one of the best strikers in the league and should have gone to the World Cup.”

(On your performance) “I’ve been very happy with my form probably since the break. I’m just glad I was able to help the team. I had a little bit of experience come into play probably on that first header from Conor. When he kind of had to check back to the ball I realized the only way he was going to beat me was by looping it back over the top. I just didn’t think he was going to be able to do it as well as he did. I think having that little bit in my mind gave me maybe that half a second that allowed me to get back to the ball.”

(On the result and the team improving) “Just a tremendous team-effort all around. I think Colorado put us under a lot of pressure the last 20 minutes and I think maybe eight games ago we would have drawn that game 2-2. I think it shows that the steps are being made and the team is coming around.”

FREDY MONTERO, forward

(On your role in both goals) “It all starts with indications from the coach, especially now with Nkufo on the field playing a little bit more up front. I can come back and play a little bit from the back, and set up plays for the guys up front.”

(On Nkufo fitting in) “The experience first of all, and being a strong player he can play (physically). That way we can serve balls and know he’ll be ready for a header or just playing with his back to the defender.”

(On responding to Colorado’s goal) “Their goal, give total credit to their player. There was really no one to blame. Just congratulations to the guy. It was definitely important for us to come back quickly and close the game.”

(On trying to chip Pickens from distance) “Definitely I saw it. The goalkeeper was playing to far up front and I wanted to surprise him. Hopefully next time one will get in.”

BLAISE NKUFO, forward

(On the game) “It was difficult, as I expected, but we won. That’s the most important.”

(How’d you feel you fit into the attack?) “You know for me, it’s not important. It’s what the team does, we needed points tonight. We made it. For me, I just build up my condition and I hope in one or two weeks I will be fit.”

(On fitness improving) “It’s not so important. I’m working. This week was very hard for me. I just build up, as I said we have to focus on the team and not me.”
