Certainly the big news of the day — if you haven’t heard by now — is the signing of Uruguayan midfielder Alvaro Fernandez as a designated player. The move was announced as I was driving to Sounders FC training and amid story writing and blog posting I was able to take a couple hurried pictures of the new guy.
Everything didn’t stop by having a new player around and the team definitely has a big league game Saturday in San Jose. The starters from Wednesday’s CONCACAF Champions League win over Metapan treated today as a regeneration day and did work to the side.
The rest of the guys did some scrimmaging drills and finishing work at the end. No one quite knows when Fernandez will be added to the active roster. The team hasn’t received his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) yet and at this current moment there’s no room. Clearly the exit of Freddie Ljungberg would seem like the natural move to make it all work, but there hasn’t been significant progress, it seems, on that front.
Anyways, here are the shots of Fernandez:
* * *
1. At 6-foot-1, he definitely showed a nice combination of size, skill and agility in Day One.
2. Here he is not far from Blaise Nkufo, to give you an idea of his size.
3. Recently married and with a wife expecting, there have been lots of life changes for El Flaco.
4. He’s a versatile midfielder that could fit in on the right or in the middle. We’ll see.
