I’ve just heard from the team that more than 14,000 tickets have been sold for Seattle’s CONCACAF Champions League group-stage match against Mexican club Monterrey at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Obviously tickets are still available and you can get them through the team website.
If you remember, Qwest Field drew a little more than 17,000 for the home leg of a two-game preliminary round with Isidro Metapan of El Salvador.
I would anticipate Wednesday night’s total to surpass 17K, but I also think all attendance numbers mentioned so far are a bit of a disappointment for those hoping the CCL becomes an important competition in this country. Certainly drawing 36,000 fans every day for MLS games increases that standard — as most teams would be thrilled to draw 14-17K.
What do you think of the early ticket sales so far?
