Adrian Hanauer discusses winning the bid for the Open Cup

Details on the announcement in a previous post.

* * *

(On getting the U.S. Open Cup final) “We bid what we thought was a pretty aggressive offer. You never know. Obviously we have a very, very difficult semifinal contest first, but if we’re fortunate enough to make it through, then it’s great to be able to play for a cup at home.”

(Did you up the bid from last year?) “Well I’m not going to talk about how we bid, just because it doesn’t do me any good to let our competitions know how we bid. But it turns out we made a bid that was good enough to beat out whoever else was in the bidding process.”

(Did crowded schedule coming up play into your bid in wanting to host?) “Sure, yeah. And if we have a chance, we always want to play at home. There’s theoretically a home-field advantage. So assuming it’s not a ridiculously bad business decision, we’re going to want to play games that we have the chance to play at home, we’re going to play at home.”

(Were there other complications last year in bidding for the final?) “There were other complications. We made an extremely good financial bid last year, but there was a conflict with the Mariners’ schedule, which was requiring a discussion about start time of the game last year, which I know U.S. Soccer didn’t like. But this year we didn’t have a conflict, so that part of the equation was taken out of the fray.”

(The secrecy hasn’t changed in the bidding process, has it?) “Nope.”

(Same as last year?) “Yep.”

(Any idea what the crowd could be like?) “I don’t. I hope a big one. I’m certain it will be a pro-Sounders crowd if we’re, again, fortunate enough to make it to the final. Again, I don’t want to start talking about final. We have a semifinal to get through first, which is going to be a very difficult game.”
