FINAL: Seattle Sounders FC 2, Chicago Fire 1, game thread

Final. Sounders FC 2, Chicago Fire 1. Sorry I wasn’t able to get to closing this thread sooner. The wild finish might’ve been wilder for us in the pressbox. More to come

90’+4′: Levesque in for Fernandez.

90+2′: GOAL SEATTLE! Nathan Sturgis cross finds a WIDE OPEN Fredy Montero on the backpost for the go-ahead goal. 2-1 Seattle over Chicago

90′: Jaqua booked for a high boot while Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson gathers a Zakuani cross. Four minutes of stoppage time.

85′: Carr on for Nyarko, just before a Chicago corner kick.

83′: Ljungberg booked for dropping the shoulder into Jeff Parke on a collision. On the other end, Zakuani is tearing up the left flank, but can’t find a target on the service.

82′: Jaqua on for Nkufo. On the previous play, a Seattle corner kick was cleared out to Wahl, but his shot from distance went over.

78′: Free kick for Chicago in a good spot, but Krol’s shot is blocked by the wall.

77′: Fernandez draws a dangerous free kick. Montero passes to a WIDE OPEN Sturgis at the top of the box, but the shot is disappointingly airmailed.

74′: Montero settles a pass from Alonso on his chest and fires a shot, right at Johnson though.

72′: Montero with a hopeful shot, it goes wide.

68′: Nkufo combines with Fernandez but can’t connect cleanly on the shot. Would’ve expected better there.

67′: Attendance: 36,386. A 28th consecutive sellout and the largest crowd for a non-friendly match.

61′: Zakuani in for Nyassi.

57′: Nyassi cross finds Montero, but he can’t get in a clean touch (ricochet off the face?) and it’s out for a goal kick.

53′: Fernandez the only one playing the ball on a lofted pass by Montero into the box. He’s dragged down, but there’s no call. The crowd and Sigi Schmid can’t believe it.

52′: Bouncing corner kick by Sturgis finds Parke in the back, but his shot is off target.

51′: More boos for Ljungberg on the left wing, but he inadvertently handles the ball and is whistled for a foul. Just a heads up, updates will be less frequent in the second half due to writing duties. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section for those following.

46′: And we’re off in the second half! No subs for Seattle.

Halftime:That Grammatrain music video is about to play. Matt Gaschk introduces the band and Sounders FC co-owner Drew Carey (who produced the music video) from field level.

Halftime: Some stats.

SHOTS: Chi 5, Sea 3

SHOTS ON GOAL: 2 apiece

FOULS: Chi 11, Sea 8

CORNER KICKS: 2 apiece

SAVES: 1 apiece

Halftime: Ref blows the whistle for the break. We’re tied up at 1-1. More to come in a bit.

45′: Two minutes of stoppage time. Physical game. Scrappy on both sides.

43′: Nkufo booked for something away from the ball. Maybe a tussle with C.J. Brown.

41′: Nkufo draws another free kick, but Sturgis again with a poor effort.

36′: GOAL SEATTLE! Tyson Wahl does well to keep a ball in bounds and swings in a cross to Fredy Montero, who takes a touch or two and fires past Sean Johnson for the equalizer. It’s 1-1.

35′: Seattle backline does well to trap Nyarko offside on a breakaway.

34′: Boos are getting louder…

32′: Nyarko back on the field after getting treatment.

30′: Nyarko down on the ground. Alvaro played on and was rudely by John from behind. Some words exchanged, but not much else out of it.

28′: GOAL Chicago. Jeff Parke handles the ball in the box and the ref awards a PK to the Fire. Ljungberg appears to turn it down. Thorrington finishes it calmly past Keller.

26′: Ljungberg corner kick won well by Ianni.

24′: Montero TAKES OUT Ljungberg from behind. No love lost there. Ljungberg got on the break after fouling Alonso, but wasn’t whistled. Montero booked. Ljungberg takes the free kick and hits it over.

22′: Highlight reel tackle by Alonso on Ljungberg. Wow.

Down the field, Montero draws a foul. Kinney booked.

18′: Nkufo draws a foul in a dangerous spot. Service from Sturgis isn’t good and is cleared by the first defender.

15′: Corner kick for Seattle punched out by Johnson.

12′: Nkufo bearing down on goal has the ball bounce up and hit his arm. He’s whistled for the foul and the dangerous moment goes for naught.

9′: And in the 9th minute Ljungberg argues with the ref for the first time tonight after Husidic fouls Alonso.

7′: Ljungberg taking a corner kick. Mainly boos for him, some cheers. John back on the field.

5′: Collins John down after a collision in the air. He’s receiving quite a bit of treatment. Might’ve hit heads with someone.

3′: Freddie Ljungberg booed noticeably on his first touch. On the other end, Fredy Montero earns a free kick (could’ve been a booking on the foul) and fires a low free-kick saved expertly by Johnson, diving to the post.

1′: And we’re off! Sounders FC in the traditional green-blue-green combo at home. Chicago wearing all white. Here’s a picture of a pregame display from the south end supporters.

Pregame: During the pregame introductions, Freddie Ljungberg gets mostly cheers, some boos. Crowd still filling in.

Pregame: Majority owner Joe Roth presents Electron Boy (aka Erik Martin) with the Golden Scarf.

Pregame: Definitely a handful of Sounders FC #10 jerseys out here.

Pregame: We’re about 20 minutes from kickoff. Freddie Ljungberg and his Chicago Fire teammates warming up in white. Starting defender Tyson Wahl (what do you think of that move?) and his Sounders FC crew are in blue shorts and green socks.

What are you looking forward to in this one?
