Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid quotes from Saturday

(Is Fernandez not here?) “His wife had a baby, so we figured for him to get home because she’s not going to be able to travel still for the next month and a half or so. We felt after the Salt Lake game was a window for him to get home, see his newborn and meet us in Costa Rica. At least it wasn’t a bigger trip per se.”

(In Uruguay?) “Yeah, he’s in Uruguay. He flew down to Montevideo and then he’ll meet in San Jose, Costa Rica on Monday.”

(Is this a last chance to be competitive in CCL group?) “It depends on how the other results go for sure, you have to think about that. I think we need to get something out of this game. We need to get a point or we need get three. For sure we need to get something out of this game.”

(On what players get from int’l duty, in regards to Nyassi) “Generally it’s a great honor for them. It’s a great reward so it fills them with confidence and enthusiasm and so forth. I think Sanna still from the long trip is maybe in a bit of recovery mode. Certainly I think it boosts his confidence level for sure.”

(On Noonan’s recovery) “Trying to figure out exactly what the injury is. He was able to do more today and they’re moving forward on his progress. Evans was able to do something today, so we’re very encouraged by that. We’re going to see how he feels tomorrow. If he (Evans) feels baseline — meaning if he feels again how he felt today in the morning — that’s a really good sign, a really good step for us with him. Noonan is a little bit the same. He did more work today, was not so much on the field but inside, and if he comes back to baseline tomorrow that’s a good sign that he’s starting to recover. We have to make some decisions by Sept. 15 because that’s roster freeze day, so we have three guys that we probably have to decide whether they’re coming off IR or not and see with other injuries that are there and make sure we have the right three guys on IR.”

(On those three IR spots) “Noonan is not on IR now. It’s Kennedy, Evans and Vagenas. And Noonan is hurt. And Nkufo is struggling a little bit. So we have to make decisions on that.”

(Will certain players travel separately on this upcoming trip, Costa Rica and Columbus?) “We could, but we’re going to take the same 20. Riley’s making good improvements, so we’re thinking about flying Riley into Columbus if it looks like he might be able to go by then.”
