Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid quotes on Thursday

(On status updates on Riley and Nkufo) “James is flying in today. He’s making good progress. I don’t know if it’ll be enough to get him into the game Saturday but we’ll make that decision tomorrow. And Blaise we’re hoping should be able to start on Saturday.”

(On the personnel moves and Evans seeing the field) “He’s still a ways away. We’re taking a little bit of a gamble because he’s probably I would say a month away, at least. But he’s a player that is versatile, that can play in the middle of midfield, that can way wide for us as well, even filled in up front obviously this season in a pinch. If he can get to a point where he’s able to help us, even if it’s off the bench for 30 minutes, we think he can offer us something that some of the other guys can’t because of his versatility. So we decided to roll the dice on that one a little bit and we hope he’s able to make it back.”

(So Noonan, Hurtado and Vagenas are out for the year?) “For league, yeah. For MLS games they’re out. They can still play Champions League and they can play in the Open cup final.”

(On Jaqua’s injury) “Yeah, he picked up a knock. He took a blow on the back of head when Schuler headed him instead of the ball. It was a little bit of a knot of the back of the head and they thought that’s all that it is, but as we got down to Costa Rica he continued to have a headache. As a result of that, to be precautionary because of the possibility of it being a concussion, it was decided not to use him. He feels good today, he trained today and he’s been headache-free for the last 36 hours.”

(On Columbus being different) “Yeah they obviously have got some new players. Mendoza’s been added. I think Griffith on the outside as well. Both those guys played a lot of minutes on Tuesday so I would assume they’re going to be substitutes in our game on Saturday. But they’ll certainly be available to them off the bench. Francis at left back has gotten a lot of minutes now so I’m sure he feels more comfortable playing out there as well. Obviously they’re missing Robbie Rogers and have a few other guys that are dinged up a little bit. It’ll be a good game.”

(On last year’s game at Columbus being one of the better ones this team has played) “I thought we were tactically pretty disciplined in that game. Obviously Kasey comes up with Schelotto missing the PK with the play there, a lot of people still blame Tyrone on that one I think. We got a very timely goal so it was very satisfying result last year. I wouldn’t call it our best games or one of our best games, but I think it tactically we were good. We were very motivated. We had it as a goal to stop that streak as well.”

(On results going your way below you in the table) “We want to take care of our points, that the first and foremost task, but we’re obviously looking at the other scores and some of those result have been good for us. The other day when Dallas wasn’t able to put away San Jose that was not a good result for us, but for the most part we’ve had some good result. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter what their results are, we have to get our points because that keeps the pressure on them. If we don’t get our points then there’s less pressure on them and then maybe the result will starting falling their way.”

(On roster expansion being a natural transition with bigger schedule) “Yeah I think that’s going to be natural transition. I think the expanded rosters and being able to go back to a reserve league I think is beneficial for the league because as the academy kids now step up to the next level you need a place for them to play if they’re not ready to play on your first team. So having a reserve league is important. What often gets overlooked in our league, is there are a lot of guys who are starting in this league now — Alejandro Moreno as an example, Larentowicz at Colorado is another example, Brandon McDonald at San Jose is another example — that without a reserve league, without there having been developmental players, those guys all started out as developmental players and have all become very solid players in this league. I think having that developmental league again is going to be important because we’re going to find some gems at the end of the day.”

(On $1 beer night on Saturday, did they have those when you were there?) “When I was here they only did the one dollar brat. We always tried to get them in the locker room and they’d never bring any down. I think that they’ve had one dollar beer nights before, but not as often. I think it’s certainly a way to encourage people to come. I think they figure by the evening time all the Ohio State fans will have had their fill of beer, so they probably wont have to dish out too much.”
