Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid quotes from Friday

(On bringing in emergency goalkeeper Kevin Guppy) “Guppy really has been down with Chivas (USA), that’s where he trains down in L.A. He played for Cal State Northridge. Since they have a game on Sunday, we were able to request him for our game on Saturday. With the injury to Dan Kennedy, he has almost been with them full-time. So he gets up here today in the afternoon and he will be there for the game tomorrow.”

(Can you bring him back for Tuesday if needed?) “No he can’t play Tuesday because he’s cup tied. What end up happening in the Open Cup, if is you’re on the bench for a team that played in the Open Cup then you’re cup tied and can’t play for another team. He’s cup tied and Boss is supposed to be back in time for Tuesday. After they play their first game Saturday we’ll have another conversation with Puerto Rico and will know if he comes back or not.”

(On what Nkufo brings to the team) “What he has brought to our offense is hold-up play. His ability to hold the ball up front allows other players to get forward. It’s tremendous if you’re a midfielder and you know the forward is going to connect his first passes, who’s going to hold the ball for you because then you can start running off the ball. If he’s going to lose it and you start running off the ball then you’re always chasing it and you’re going to get real tired real quick. He has helped us an awful lot with his hold-up play, his experience. He draws the attention of the opponent’s defense because they have to be aware of him. That opens up space for Fredy Montero. That opens up space for Steve Zakuani. So it’s a big help to our whole team.”

(On match against Toronto FC) “A team that is desperate like they are you always have to take seriously because for them it’s a playoff game. Tomorrow is a playoff game. Playoffs don’t start in November for them. They start right now. So we have to come out with that same mentality because if we don’t match their intensity, if we don’t match their mentality, then that sometimes becomes the difference in the game. When you play a desperate team, you know it’s a playoff game for them and you really have to work on making sure you match their mentality.”

(On how Toronto has changed with the new coach) “They have probably juggled the lineup around a little bit more. He has played [Dan] Gargan in the middle of midfield where he was playing more on the outside under Preki. He has tried Ty Harden at left back. He has played different combinations and different units so it’s a little harder to predict maybe who is going to be starting or what their starting group is going to be.”

(On defending De Rosario) “It depends where he’s playing. Is he playing as a second forward? Is he playing as one of the wingers? Obviously he’s a player where we have to know where he is at all times and we have to make sure when he gets the ball, whoever’s closest has to get (to him) and limit his space as soon as possible. We’re not going to mark him man-to-man or go personal, but we have to limit his space. He’s a player who’s been around this league for a long time and he’s a guy who’s shown he can consistently score goals and set up goals. You have to be aware of where he is because he can beat you with his speed and he can beat you with his shot from distance.”
