FINAL: Sounders FC 2, Columbus Crew 1, USOC game thread

FINAL! Sounders FC wins 2-1. Michael Kennedy blows his whistle and the bench clears, the crowd erupts! More to come.

90’+2: Seattle sub: Jaqua on for Montero.

90′: Three minutes of added time.

90′: Seattle sub: Levesque for Zakuani.

87′: Yellow card to Schelotto. Seattle taking time on the restart.

85′: MISS! Low cross comes in to Rogers but he slams it off the crossbar.

84′: Writing duties starting to take over. I’ll try to keep updating the time at least until the end.

81′: Last Crew sub: Rogers on for Gaven.

79′: Seattle sub: Fernandez in for Nyassi. Gets a huge ovation, including from Alonso.

78′: Crew subs: Renteria in for Lenhart. Mendoza for Burns.

75′: Qwest Field attendance, 31,311. Sets a new record for an Open Cup final. Nyassi booked in the meantime.

74′: Alonso with a yellow card for a professional foul to stop a Crew break.

69′: Lenhart gets some space at the top of the Sounders penalty box, but his shot is wide.

66′: GOAL SEATTLE! Steve Zakuani beats Hejduk to a bouncing Montero cross and heads it off the crossbar. The heads-up Nyassi is there to hammer home the rebound. Sounders FC lead 2-1.

64′: Gaven gets some space and fires a long distance shot on Keller, but Seattle’s captain saves it well.

60′: Zakuani gets behind the Crew defense, but Gruenebaum off his line well to smother the attack.

59′: Seattle stays on the attack (Keller hasn’t had to do much in this half), but no clear-cut chances yet. A lot is coming from the wings, and Columbus centerbacks Marshall and Iro are handling the crosses well.

54′: Wahl with a couple crosses from the left in the last few minutes. Neither of particular quality. A minute later Seattle gets a corner kick, but Gruenebaum takes it.

49′: Hejduk earns Columbus a corner kick. Cleared by Nkufo.

47′: Montero sets up Zakuani on the left side, his cross to Nyassi doesn’t connect. Not on the same page there.

46′: And we’re off in the second half. No changes from what I see.

Halftime: Some stats…

Shots: SEA 4, CLM 4

Shots on goal: SEA 3, CLM 1

Fouls: SEA 6, CLM 5

Offsides: SEA 0, CLM 0

Corner kicks: SEA 1, CLM 0

Saves: SEA 0, CLM 2

Halftime: Sounders FC 1-1 Columbus. The Crew took a shocking but well-taken lead on the Burns goal, but Seattle fought back to get the equalizer courtesy of Nyassi before the break. All to play for still in this one. More to come.

45′: One minute of stoppage time. A knock to Nyassi might extend that a little.

45′: Marshall just beats out Zakuani for a ball in the box. Close call there.

41′: Carroll booked for taking out Zakuani on the break.

38′: GOAL SEATTLE! Sanna Nyassi, after battling the Crew goalkeeper for a cross, collects a deflected pass from Nathan Sturgis and fires a shot past Gruenebaum for the equalizer.

37′: Corner kick coming for Seattle. Cleared out.

34′: Great anticipation by Zakuani, finds Nyassi on the right wing. The cross in, however, is cleared.

30′: Seattle with another chance as Montero was fouled by Schelotto on the right side — they had some battles a couple weeks ago — but Sturgis’ free kick is cleared.

28′: Francis booked for a tackle on Sturgis. Dangerous free kick coming. Played short and nothing comes of it.

27′: The Crew opportunistic on the chance, but have been getting some good looks on Wahl’s side.

24′: GOAL COLUMBUS: Kevin Burns set up by Lenhart after Hejduk gets behind the defense and cuts it back. Seattle will have to come back now, something they’ve shown the ability to do recently.

23′: James Riley booked for another foul. Seemed a bit harsh.

21′: Kennedy with a very soft foul call on Montero. Ekpo sold it. Crowd doesn’t like it.

20′: MISS! Best chance of the game right there for Columbus. Schelotto finds Ekpo behind the defense on the right, he cuts it back to Gaven for a wide-open shot but he mis-hits it over the goal. Seattle catches a break there.

18′: Fine crossed by both Zakuani and Nkufo, but neither find a target. Sounders the most dangerous team so far.

16′: A nice Zakuani run sets up another shot by Montero. Again it’s saved by Gruenebaum.

16′: SEATTLE!!! SOUNDERS!!! Crowd getting into this one.

13′: Columbus playing very defensively to start. Dropping 10 behind the ball when Seattle gets it.

12′: Gaven takes a hopeful shot. It’s way high.

11′: Riley trips Gaven on the break. Looks like they got tangled up, but the Sounders defender could’ve been booked there.

8′: Schelotto down. Doesn’t need treatment. Maybe he’s making a point about the turf.

7′: Great buildup from Seattle. Nkufo heads it to Montero, who springs Zakuani free on the left. After beating Hejduk to the endline, Zakuani crosses it back but Nkufo can’t get much on the shot.

3′: Fredy Montero with two scoring chances in the first couple minutes. First he heads a cross from Sanna Nyassi right at Crew goalkeeper Gruenebaum. Later his shot from 30 yards is just over the crossbar.

1′: And we’re off!

Pregame: Supporters in the south end with a “The Boys From Seattle Are Back” tifo. Just a few moments from kickoff.

Pregame: Here’s the walkout. Seattle in the electricity yellow and Columbus in the black, as expected.

Pregame: The shiny trophy is out on the field again. Starting lineups being announced. Energy and excitement are building.

Pregame: We’re approaching kickoff in this one and the crowd is filling in. Maybe 10 ten minutes until we get rolling.
