I, along with countless others I’m sure, have been captivated by the remarkable rescue of the Chilean miners. And I wouldn’t bring this to the blog without some soccer connections I found intriguing as well.
They were all over. First is the picture above of President Sebastian Pinera giving a soccer ball to rescued miner and ex-player Franklin Lobos. Upon reaching the surface, another miner was given a flag to his favorite team, Universidad de Chile — the former team of Sounders FC designated player Alvaro Fernandez. Heck, during TV broadcasts I overheard the famous “Chi! Chi! Chi! Le! Le! Le!” chant of national team fans.
There’s more. The miners will be getting an all-expenses paid trip to the Greek Islands, which includes a couple soccer-related amenities:
The trip includes a stop in Madrid to watch a Real Madrid game, then a trip to England, where they will see Manchester United play. Football clubs around the world have sent signed shirts, while the Chilean football players’ association has offered a trip to South Korea.
Here’s a link to a bit more on Real Madrid’s support. Again, a story to remember.
