Sounders FC

Daily coverage of Seattle Sounders FC, MLS and world soccer.

A stop and chat with Sounders’ owner/GM Adrian Hanauer

(What was that weekend like from your perspective?) “It was a crazy weekend. You couldn’t turn your television off for very long without re-booking travel plans. In the end we were fine with whatever match-up we had. We’re looking forward to taking on the Galaxy. Obviously we owe them. They thumped us pretty good a couple of times this year and it’s a good opportunity for us to show them and show the world that we’re a different team than we were at the beginning of the season.”

(Do you want to fix the playoff structure?) “I think there is a pretty strong movement to explore the playoff system, not just from us. That said, I’ve been a part of USL for seven years and MLS the last few years, and I don’t remember a year when there wasn’t a discussion about whether the playoffs was the right system. Whether it’ll come to a minor change or a dramatic change, I couldn’t say. But I don’t think any playoff system is perfect and it always seems to bother teams the most when it disadvantages them as opposed to them reaping the benefits. I don’t have really strong feelings about a new system that I see is the perfect system, but I know we’re anxious to have at least those discussions as well and always trying to improve the system.”

(What’s imperfect about 1v8, 2v7, etc.?) “I don’t have an answer for you at this moment. I’m sure I can come up with one. Well I suppose that the potential imperfection is that just like with this system you don’t necessarily with West versus East in the final. You could have four teams in the semifinals all from the West or all from the East. Again, that certainly one that has come up — is reseeding.”

(Are you disappointed with the game being on Halloween night? Have you planned anything to appease that conflict from families? Note: Asked before this release came out) “It wasn’t optimal, that’s for sure. It wasn’t our first choice and we were sort of dictated by TV needs and the league’s overall scheduling. It didn’t make us happy. That said, we’re going to be a team player as far as the league goes. We have a strong level of confidence in our fans and their strong desire to see our games. On top of that we have some marketing tricks we can pull out and we will and are. We’re going to try and turn it into a slightly festive atmosphere. I think we’ve got costume contests and trick-or-treating on the suite level and various things to try to give families an excuse to drag the kids and not miss Halloween. Ticket sales are pretty strong and we still expect a sellout and a great atmosphere even though it’s Halloween.”

(Are you holding capacity like it was for the regular season?) “I don’t know that we’ve made that decision 100-percent. I think we’re going to sort of gauge demand. If we sold out the current capacity immediately I have a feeling we would probably open up more. But we also don’t want to open up a piece of the stadium and not have it filled in appropriately.”
