Sounders FC

Daily coverage of Seattle Sounders FC, MLS and world soccer.

Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid quotes from Tuesday

(On having one week to prepare for second leg . . .) “Actually, I think as a player you would rather get on the field sooner rather than later, especially when the result doesn’t go your way. You want to get out there and make amends or just, ‘OK, let’s get it right this time.’ It is what it is. We will use the time to prepare ourselves physically and mentally.”

(On Jeff Parke . . .) “It’s definitely an ankle sprain. We have got to see how he responds over the next couple of days. The earliest that we would think about having him train is probably Friday.”

(On how to approach second leg . . .) “I used to have a player I coached in L.A. that used to say 1-0 is nothing. You can make up 1-0 in three minutes, so we have 90 minutes to make up 1-0. I think the field in L.A. suits us. It plays wide. We are looking forward to playing them.”

(On players getting their green cards . . .) “Having those players get their green cards means you have more options to go to. This year in the Open Cup Leo [Gonzalez] couldn’t play because we had too many foreign players, so it avoids some of those decisions. It just gives you the opportunity, whether the player is American or foreign, if he is going to be somebody who is going to help your team you can sign him. It doesn’t matter what nationality he is.”

(On team’s confidence . . .) “Good. I think we just need a little bit more. They are a little more mature than us, a little older team. Sometimes when push comes to shove that helps. We now have to mature. I think we are a very good team. I think we know how to play soccer. I think it showed on Sunday that we played very good soccer at times. We held the ball. We knocked the ball around well. We tried to carry the game. But at the end of the day you need a little bit of mentality sometimes to take yourself from being a very good team into a great team and that’s where this team is sitting on – that threshold point. We will come out on Sunday and we are going to try to take ourselves to the next level.”

(On being down 1-0 . . .) “I don’t think it’s something that is insurmountable. I think it matters how the game goes early on. We will get a good taste and we will get a good feel for it. We will see if they are a little more offensively inclined at home. If they are going to play the same way that’s something we will determine early on in the game and then the rest of the game will flow out of that. We have been a good road team. I know they have been a good road team as well and they showed that. But we have been a good road team also and we just have to bring that into the play on Sunday.”
