Steve Zakuani decides on national team, but he’s not telling

With the announcement of Fredy Montero earning his green card Monday, Sounders FC teammate Steve Zakuani said he’s not far behind either. Amid that discussion the inevitable questions about his national team future came up, holding options with DR Congo, England and the U.S. Here’s how that went:

* * *

(Do you have three potential national teams?) “Yeah I do, but I know where I’m going to play now. Potentially I can play for three, but I already know.”

(Who’s it going to be?) “I know. One. (laughs)”

(Do they know?) “They will know soon. Yeah.”

(How soon will we know?) “When I play.”

(On Landon Donovan’s comments about encouraging Bob Bradley to call you into USMNT camp) “Like I said before, I think that’s probably the highest compliment you can get in this league because for me he’s the best player in the league. … To hear praise from someone like that is great but it doesn’t change my approach against him. I’m not going to be any nicer to him. It was good. We have the same agent so we have the same connection there. When you hear something like that from Landon Donovan, it’s really good to get recognition for what you do, from someone who you aspire to me like in your career. It’s a good thing.”

(Have you had conversations with the teams recently?) “I’ve put that out. I’ve told everybody around me that I just want to focus on the playoffs. That was my approach. I haven’t spoken to anybody from anyone purposely because I just want to play in the playoffs. When the season’s finished things move fast. It happened last year and it’ll happen this year, when you kind of reflect on your career — where you’re headed, what you want to do in the future, and that’s going to be part of my discussions. Right now, honestly, that’s not even in my mind. I’m focused solely on the playoffs and winning this game.”
