Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid quotes from Wednesday

(On matchup with L.A. Galaxy . . .) “It’s what I expected. Their game plan was not different than what I expected. I think they executed it well. They disrupted our midfield play, which is something they wanted to do. We have to understand that the refereeing in the playoffs tends to be a little more lax and they let things go, so we have to be prepared for that and understand that and not think we are going to get fouls in certain situations. But in terms of the matchup of the teams, I don’t think there’s a lot between the teams in terms of a lot of difference where one is far better than the other. Obviously right now we have played each other four times and we’ve won one and they’ve won three, so it favors them. But I think at the end of the day it probably evens out. Hopefully this is a game where is evens out.”

(On Fredy Montero . . .) “He will be ready to go. Like I said, forwards are always a little bit streaky in terms of what they do so we hope he runs into a good streak. I think he understands what’s going to happen and that they are going to try and take him aggressively so sometimes he maybe needs to part with the ball a shade sooner. At the end of the day, he is a player who can put together some special pieces and Blaise [Nkufo] as well is a player who can put together some special pieces and special players can be the difference in a tight game.”

(On Sounders FC defense . . .) “We’ve got to concentrate. We’ve got to be good with our transition. I think that’s important against them because they almost caught us a couple times in the second half on counters – the [Landon] Donovan one and the Juninho one. And we have got to do a good job of keeping those key players bottled up. Our game plan has got to be that we’ve got to score goals. We’ve got to be a little more patient in the attacking third at the right time. We’ve got to be able to make them move a little bit more, chase the ball a little bit more. If we can do that, we will create some openings.”

(On approach to elimination game . . .) “We have been in a couple of do-or-die games that we’ve succeeded in. We have won a couple of championships. The way I look at it right now is this is our fifth tournament that we have participated in in two years as a club. We have won two of them – two U.S. Open Cups. We didn’t win MLS Cup and obviously we got knocked out of CONCACAF. So we have a chance to win a third one if we can be successful here on Sunday. [. . .] The elimination side of it, I think we know how to play in a ‘this is it’ game. This is the final game. We have been there. We have played in that and we have shown ourselves to be a pretty good side with that. It’s now the MLS Playoffs. They have a lot of veteran players and they have got guys who are experienced and cagey and know how to take the air out of the ball when they have to and know how to go at you as well at times. There are guys who have been in a lot of big games for them, whether it’s [David] Beckham or [Landon] Donovan or [Donovan] Ricketts. A lot of those guys have played in pretty important matches so they are a pretty experienced side.”

(On Jeff Parke . . .) “Parke, as I told you, he wouldn’t train until Friday anyway. He’s making progress. We are happy with the swelling. But right now I couldn’t tell you whether he would be able to go this weekend or not. We are hoping so. He was a lot better today than he was yesterday.”
