Major League Soccer power rankings — playoff edition #2

Here’s how I rank the final four teams after their performances in the conference semifinals:

1. L.A. Galaxy (beat Sounders FC 3-1 on aggregate) — Had the only dominant showing of the first round with two wins against Seattle. No team but L.A. advanced with a two-goal margin and Bruce Arena’s side showed extraordinary balance in doing so. The favorite now to win it all, I think.

2. FC Dallas (beat Real Salt Lake 3-2 on aggregate) — David Ferreira and Co. looked great eliminating my championship pick early on. So much for that and their two-game losing streak going into the playoffs. There are lots of unsung heroes on that side, including Schellas Hyndman’s leather jacket.

3. S.J. Earthquakes (beat New York 3-2 on aggregate) — Getting a 3-1 win at Red Bull Arena might have been the best result of the first round. Credit midfielder Bobby Convey, who deserves to be in the running for the Best XI, for leading the way. There’s a lot more to this side than the goal-scoring Chris Wondolowski.

4. Colorado Rapids (beat Columbus on penalties after being 2-2 on aggregate) — Snuck by when Crew midfielder Brian Carroll skied a spot kick in Baggio style. I picked them to make it through the East en route to the MLS Cup, but winning a coin flip (re: PKs) against what had been a struggling Columbus side doesn’t elicit much confidence.
