MLS playoff bracket update: Colorado through to MLS Cup

If you’re trying to figure out which MLS team benefited most from the current playoff structure, look no further than Colorado. The seventh-seeded Rapids were the second-to-last team in the postseason field but got placed into the weaker Eastern Conference. Coach Gary Smith‘s side also got to host Saturday night’s conference final against No. 8 San Jose.

Thanks to a somewhat lucky goal by defender Kosuke Kimura — whose hurried cross fortuitously curled past teammate Omar Cummings and Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch into the net — Colorado earned the 1-0 win in front of nearly 18,000 at a chilly Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

For those that watched, the finishing from both teams was poor and the quality left something to be deserved. The Rapids certainly could have had another goal or two if it weren’t for Cummings’ failed one-on-one chances with Busch. The ‘Quakes also could claim they deserved a score, but lamenting missed chances doesn’t hold up as well at this point in the season.

Championship teams make the most of their opportunities. We’ll see who’s holding up the trophy in a week. Those are my thoughts. What do you think?
