MLS commissioner Don Garber announces 2011 changes

If you’re not on Twitter (where the news broke first) you had to wait until halftime of the MLS Cup to hear the news, but on the ESPN broadcast MLS commissioner Don Garber announced a bunch of upcoming changes. First, he said the playoff field will consist of 10 teams next season. The logistics haven’t been sorted out yet — there might be first-round byes and/or play-in games — but indeed more than half of the 18-team league will advance to postseason. I don’t like it.

Garber also said the league will have a balanced 34-game schedule next year with each MLS side playing home and away against every other team. Though with Montreal joining the league in 2012, that will surely change. I don’t have a strong opinion about balanced or unbalanced schedules, but others do.

Lastly, the idea of switching to an international schedule was also raised — playing through the winter months like the rest of the soccer world instead of summer — but that switch would likely happen a couple years down the line, if ever. I don’t see it happening. MLS won’t do well competing against football and basketball and playing in the winter.
