Sounders FC

Daily coverage of Seattle Sounders FC, MLS and world soccer.

December 1, 2010 at 4:58 AM

I’m taking some time off so let’s take a look back at Year 1

I’m off for a little vacation this morning, meaning I won’t have coverage of Sounders FC’s player announcement later today or Thursday’s FIFA announcement of which countries will host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. It’s too bad, but finding an off week during the crazy MLS season/offseason isn’t easy.

I’ll be back next week, but I wanted to take this time on the blog to reflect on my first year on the beat and get some of your feedback. Obviously I’m still learning as I go and won’t nearly pretend to have all the answers. Please feel free to offer your thoughts of the coverage in the comments section and don’t hold back in your criticisms — I can take it and it will help me get better.

In my opinion, some things went well and in other areas I’ll look to improve. Among the things I liked were the new features, notably the MLS power rankings and postgame player ratings. I also tried to find ways to get as much info out to you as possible — e.g. liberal posting of press releases, transcribing entire interviews and lots of links. Being able to get to 12 road games was nice too — I’m not sure any MLS beat writer in the country can top that. It’s a testament to the Times’ commitment to the sport, as was allowing for a Sunday A1 centerpiece.

On the other side, I’ll try to do better at talking tactics on the blog for the more soccer-savvy readers. I also want to provide more analysis and commentary. More live chats and Q&A mailbags are planned too. Finally, getting a better understanding of MLS rules and procedures continues to be a goal, as well as getting in tune with issues dear to the fans (the season-ticket price change, away ticket allocation, etc.).

But I want to hear from you. Whether you enjoyed the coverage, were highly disappointed or somewhere in between, your feedback will help me immensely as we head into Year 3 for Sounders FC.

See you in a week!
