Longtime UW men’s soccer coach Dean Wurzberger resigns

wuzrberger.jpgThe first beat I ever had was covering the Husky men’s soccer team for the UW Daily. It was a great gig for a soccer-crazy student — I got to cover guys like George John, Kevin Forrest, Ely Allen, Ty Harden and Raphael Cox, who all saw time with MLS teams to varying degrees. I also got to work with coach Dean Wurzberger for a couple years, so I definitely took notice when he announced his resignation after 19 years at Washington.

Great local soccer personality; pretty sure he was an assistant to Sigi Schmid at UCLA in the ’80s. He also was a reserve for the NASL Sounders back in the day. Here’s a story on GoHuskies.com and a short AP story on the move. Here’s a quote on the school site explaining his motivations.

“After a recent review of my professional and personal goals and future ambitions, I have decided that I will step down from my position of head men’s soccer coach,” Wurzberger said. “While coaching at UW has and always will mean a great deal to me, I have to think about family first in this matter. After engaging the administration in an open dialogue about my family situation and my future professional plans, in the end I think we all came to agree that my decision to resign is in the best interest of both my family and the UW men’s soccer program. I depart very proud of the soccer program I have helped build here over the past 19 years and I have also gained much in regards to developing my coaching skills and increasing my depth of experience.”

Wurzberger finished with a 220-112-41 record and made the NCAA tournament 11 times in the last 15 seasons (the Huskies were probably one of the last teams out of the 2010 field). The first full-time men’s soccer coach at UW was also the longest tenured coach in the conference and won Pac-10 Co-Coach of the Year in 2004.

I wonder if those “professional and personal goals and future ambitions” involve MLS…
