Sounders FC could have two first-round picks in 2011 draft

At a recent business meeting with season-ticket holders and others, Sounders FC owner and general manager Adrian Hanauer mentioned that Seattle has four picks in the first two rounds of the upcoming SuperDraft in January.

Due to its finish in the 2010 season, Sounders FC picks 11th overall in the first round and 29th overall in the second round. Seattle gained D.C. United’s second-round pick in a midseason trade for midfielder Stephen King. After trading designated player Freddie Ljungberg to Chicago, Sounders FC also received another pick — a conditional one that could actually be a top 10 choice.

So here are the scenarios:

A) If Chicago does not re-sign Ljungberg, then Seattle receives the 27th overall pick (the Fire’s second-round pick) in the 2011 draft.

B) If Chicago does re-sign Ljungberg before the SuperDraft, then Seattle receives the 9th overall pick (the Fire’s first-round pick) in the 2011 draft.

C) If Chicago does re-sign Ljungberg after the SuperDraft, then Seattle drafts under Scenario A in 2011. Also, Sounders FC will swap its second-round pick in 2012 for the Fire’s first-round pick in 2012.

Any thoughts? Rooting for Freddie to stay in MLS?
