A big bag of holiday weekend news, links and other goodies

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. I wanted to pass along another bunch of links in the down time.

First off, The Seattle Times had top 10 lists for the most viewed articles and most viewed photo galleries of the year, and the story of Electron Boy — shown above saving the Sounders, who were trapped inside a dark locker-room — made appearances in both. That was certainly one of the highlights of the season I thought. I know I saved my Electron Boy sticker, as did a handful of players.

Some other local interest stories: one FOX Soccer personality picked Sounders FC’s electricity uniform as one of the year’s most stylish and midfielder Osvaldo Alonso was picked by FutbolMLS as the league’s most underrated player.

If you’re looking for a good read, check out this story of former UW Husky Troy Ready, whose travels have taken him as far as Tajikistan.

More links after the jump…

Keep your friends close and enemies closer

I get plenty of requests for updates on Portland and Vancouver, so here are a couple stories involving the Timbers. Word is the rivals to the South are interested in former USL Sounder Marcus Hahnemann. Here’s a story on the journey of Mamadou “Futty” Danso. Also their jerseys are selling like hot cakes.

Other happenings around MLS

— Chivas USA has signed its re-entry draft selection and veteran defender Jimmy Conrad. Word is the team is also expected to announce the hiring of Juan Carlos Osorio as head coach soon.

— New England made a pair of signings, including Ryan Cochrane (a re-entry draft pick) and long-time goalkeeper Matt Reis, who had a frustrating 2010.

— Mexican national Guillermo Franco is apparently interested in MLS.

— In other league signings, here’s a story on Philadelphia’s new home-grown talent, Real Salt Lake extended the loan of a young Brazilian and Columbus is bringing a defender from Chile.

— For those interested in the SuperDraft, here’s the latest Big Board from Soccer By Ives.

— Lastly, ex-D.C. United striker Danny Allsopp has found a new team in his home country of Australia and here’s a Q&A with Colorado defender Marvell Wynne.

Checking in with some USMNTers

— Back to a Seattle Times top 10 list, local reaction to Landon Donovan‘s goal against Algeria was the most watched video on our website. Speaking of Donovan, sounds like the papers on his divorce have been filed.

— World Cup forward Robbie Findley has landed with Nottingham Forest. Here’s some analysis on the growth of another forward, Jozy Altidore.

— Finally, in one man’s opinion, Teal Bunbury‘s decision to play for the U.S. was bad in the long run.

Scoping out the international scene

— FC Barcelona has announced its 2011 summer tour, including friendlies against Manchester United and AC Milan. That has left some to wonder if either of those two opponents might be coming to the Northwest for a match against Sounders FC.

Robbie Keane, a rumored target of MLS, is searching for a new team. Sir Alex has closed the door on a possible David Beckham return to Old Trafford. Also, Thierry Henry will be giving back his World Cup bonus.

— Hope you like Michel Platini because he’s running for re-election to be UEFA’s president… unopposed.

— To close, a look at how Qatar became a worldwide player in soccer.
