Okoli to be the first homegrown signing? and other links

Goal.com recently caught up with a couple Sounders FC officials to talk about the team’s academy. The story quotes director of youth development Darren Sawatzky as saying a homegrown signing “could happen any day now.” GM Adrian Hanauer pumped the brakes a little by saying “there is nothing imminent at this moment.”

The interesting part came later:

A source familiar with the situation told Goal.com that forward Sean Okoli has been in negotiations to become the first Home Grown signing for Seattle.

Certainly anyone that has kept a wandering eye on the academy knows that Sean Okoli is one of the top prospects on the U18 side. There are a handful of others as well, but the Wake Forest commit is generally among the first names mentioned when it comes to homegrown signings. He’s spent a fair share of time training with the senior team as well.

Something to keep an eye on, for sure. Other team links below and more after the jump:

— Apparently Lamar Neagle‘s old team in Finland has said he’s not in their future plans. Here’s a site that ranks clubs’ popularity through Twitter followers and Facebook friends. Lastly, technical director Chris Henderson makes an appearance on an “Inside the SuperDraft” video clip from the league website.

Keeping up with the USMNTers

— Here’s a story from ESPN.com saying Jozy Altidore‘s move to Bursapor in Turkey is a big one in his career. Here’s a video clip of his arrival.

— Shocking one here, D.C. United is bringing Charlie Davies into camp with the hopes of working out a loan deal. Did not see that one coming.

SI.com caught up with defender Oguchi Onyewu, who moved to FC Twente (Blaise Nkufo‘s old team).

— I know Freddy Adu is on the fringe of this group, but he’s also at a new team.

Major League Soccer notes

SoccerAmerica has this really interesting look into the relationship between the league and Adidas.

— Arsenal is apparently tracking No. 1 SuperDraft pick Omar Salgado, currently with Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The new Chicharito the report calls him.

— TSN is going to carry a game of the week for Canadian teams and here’s a map with the big academies around the country.

Closing video

Over in Spain did you see this from the Real Madrid-Osasuna match? Whenever Cristiano Ronaldo and the boys went on the attack the opposing fans had a curious way to disrupt it.
