Red Bull Arena to host 2011 MLS All-Star Game on July 27

Not sure this is necessarily a “major” announcement, but MLS revealed early Tuesday morning that the 2011 MLS All-Star Game will be played at Red Bull Arena at 5:30 p.m. PT on July 27. It’s the first time in 14 years that the New York metropolitan area gets the event.

No opponent was named and ticket information will be determined later.

“The combination of one of the most spectacular stadiums of its size in the world with the passionate soccer supporters in the metropolitan New York area will provide a terrific showcase for our All-Star Game,” said commissioner Don Garber on the league website. “Red Bull Arena will be a tremendous venue for this marquee event and we are pleased to bring the All-Star Game to an area with a rich soccer tradition.”

Garber, Landon Donovan and Thierry Henry will discuss the news via teleconference this afternoon.

New York hasn’t hosted an all-star game since Giants Stadium held back-to-back events in the league’s first two years in 1996-97, each were East vs. West. We’ll see which opponent the league can line up for this one. Whatever the choice, it should be quite an event at the $200 million, 25,000-seat stadium.

Red Bulls season-ticket holders will get first crack at it before tickets go on sale to the public.

Any thoughts on this one? Underwhelmed by the announcement?
