Sounders FC and Blaise Nkufo mutually agree to cut ties

Earlier news about Blaise Nkufo‘s status seems minor compared to the latest development. Sounders FC and the Swiss striker have mutually agreed to part ways according to a team announcement.

Nkufo’s status is being negotiated by Seattle, Major League Soccer and Nkufo’s representative. The 35-year-old designated player joined the team last July after representing Switzerland at the FIFA World Cup and winning the Dutch league title with FC Twente.

“We want to thank Blaise for his contributions to the team last season,” said GM Adrian Hanauer in the release. “Blaise is a quality person and we wish him nothing but the best.”

Nkufo had five goals in 2010, including the franchise’s first hat trick against Columbus.

“This move improves our flexibility with regard to the salary cap,” Hanauer said.

That final quote is an interesting note that shouldn’t be disregarded.
