Sounders FC training Wednesday at Starfire — photo reel

group0412.JPGA bit tardy, but I’ll try to make it somewhat worthwhile. Just a heads up, you might want to get used to the term “Starfire Sports Campus” — I hear that’s the preferred nomenclature as of very recently.

After the sun and softball on Tuesday it was back to rain and soccer on Wednesday. The group did some fitness work at the beginning before breaking off into possession drills. Then the team worked on breakaways — both creating them and defending them. Consider that a product of the scouting report. Also, as you may have heard or seen before, U.S. youth national Kelyn Rowe (a Federal Way native) was around for the day.

Fredy Montero, the only player listed on the injury report, was back in action and looked good. He was a neutral in early possession work but participated in scrimmages and other drills. He wasn’t with the first team yet, as you might expect, and it looked like the starters from the Chicago game got a lot of work in together. At the end of training (as you’ll see in a picture) Montero was battling fitness coach Dave Tenney, as if to simulate the physical play he’d face in game action. He practiced falling a couple times and how to protect the wrist. Playing with a cast will definitely take some getting used to.

1. Here’s a shot of Montero waiting his turn in a finishing drill. Note the precipitation.

2. Here’s a brief look at Rowe. I covered a couple of his high-school games. Afterward he told me he’s off to Europe to try to catch on with a team in France or Germany.

5. Academy product Ryan Herman (the tall goalkeeper) was on hand for work.

6. Here Montero tussles with Tenney. He’s expected to wear the cast for at least three weeks.
