Servando Carrasco fined, suspended for tackle last week

carrasco mug.jpgLate in Sounders FC’s 2-1 win against the Chicago last week, Seattle’s rookie midfielder Servando Carrasco (right) came in with a dangerous tackle on Fire midfielder Patrick Nyarko. The challenge forced Nyarko to leave the game injured, but Carrasco earned only a yellow card for the challenge.

On Friday, the MLS Disciplinary Committee announced the tackle was worthy of a red card and have retroactively fined and suspended Carrasco. The 22-year-old must pay $500 and sit out Saturday vs. Philadelphia.

Sounders FC confirmed that Carrasco was not one of the 19 players that traveled for tomorrow’s game at PPL Park. I think it’s safe to assume the league gave Seattle heads up that the penalty could be coming because 24-hours notice would seem a bit unreasonable — especially since the team’s flight was Thursday.

Drafted out of Cal in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft, Carrasco had suited up for all five games this season. He started March 19 in New York and played 79 minutes.
