My Major League Soccer power rankings — week six

Real Salt Lake Logo.jpgToday will be a bit of a light day from me as I come off a long travel weekend and look forward to Friday’s trip to Colorado. Here are my latest power rankings, which in this league of parity/mediocrity is increasing hard to do every week.

Ranking the top team is easy enough though. And feel free to comment here if you’re watching the RSL’s CONCACAF Champions League game tonight.

* * *

1. (1) Real Salt Lake 4-0-0

All eyes around MLS are on the first leg of the CCL final on Wed.

2. (3) Los Angeles Galaxy 3-1-3

Managed four points out of two games last week, severely shorthanded without Donovan.

3. (2) Colorado Rapids 3-2-0

Have lost two in a row, but Friday return home, where they’ve outscored opponents 7-2.

4. (4) Philadelphia Union 3-1-1

The assignment is easy for the bye week: find a way to score more than one goal a game.

5. (5) New York Red Bulls 2-1-2

Thierry Henry silenced his growing critics with a big game in a 3-0 win against San Jose.

6. (11) Houston Dynamo 2-1-2

Back-to-back wins and some new signings have brought excitement to Dom Kinnear’s side.

7. (14) Columbus Crew 2-1-2

A shutout streak of 373 minutes (four straight clean sheets) is one short of the club record.

8. (9) Sounders FC 1-2-3

A four-game winless streak turned quickly into a four-game unbeaten streak. Time to win.

9. (15) D.C. United 2-2-1

Charlie Davies continues a storybook comeback with his league-leading fifth goal Saturday.

10. (18) Portland Timbers 2-2-1

Couldn’t have scripted a better home-opening weekend with two uplifting wins.

11. (6) San Jose Earthquakes 1-2-2

One of only two MLS teams (with Chivas USA) that’s winless at home, at 0-1-2.

12. (7) Sporting Kansas City 1-2-1

40 percent into a 10-game road trip as they wait for the new stadium to open. Can’t be easy.

13. (13) Vancouver Whitecaps FC 1-2-3

DP Eric Hassli avoided a red card over the weekend. Considering his antics, that’s a success.

14. (12) New England Revolution 1-2-3

Have played three home games and haven’t cracked 28,000 in total attendance.

15. (8) Chicago Fire 1-3-1

Three straight losses have taken the shine out of early success. Can’t win without defense.

16. (10) FC Dallas 1-3-1

Don’t blame reigning MVP David Ferreira (three goals, one assist) for a slow start.

17. (16) Toronto FC 1-2-3

Humiliated in a 3-0 defeat to D.C. Next up? Columbus, an opponent TFC has never beaten.

18. (17) Chivas USA 0-2-3

The only winless team left. Will it regret passing on USMNT midfielder Benny Feilhaber?
