GM Adrian Hanauer comments on (or around) the Philly issue

Here’s another topic from yesterday we got to ask about today at Sounders FC training. This post mentions that Philadelphia might try to bring in Real Madrid for a July 23 friendly, which would force a reschedule of the Sounders FC home game that day. Rumors swirled around Twitter earlier that October 8 (an open date for Seattle) would be the ideal solution. We asked Sounders FC general manager Adrian Hanauer about that and here are his answers:

* * *

(On Philadelphia maybe trying to schedule a friendly with Real Madrid and having to possibly reschedule the July 23 game…) “We’ll probably wait to comment on that, but we are a single-entity structure as a league, which means that we, within reason, try to work together to do what’s best for the league and the game in general. But the specifics of whether there’s a potential game in Philadelphia or a game being moved, we’ll wait to comment specifically on that.”

(The presumption is July would be more open and later months more crowded…) “I don’t know that that’s really true. We have Champions League play-in and Open Cup in July and August. Then Champions League in October and September. It’s pretty crowded throughout. I haven’t looked and counted games but I’m not sure that there really is much of a difference from here on out in the numbers of games. And, again I’m not necessarily commenting on the specifics, but we have a lot of guys injured right now. The more games potentially that we can back-load might be good for guys.”

(Does single-entity mean that you can’t just say no?) “That’s accurate, although we certainly have a lot of ability to navigate our own destiny. But the board of governors runs our league as a whole. Potentially there could potentially be decisions that one team tries to make on their own that the board of governors would get together and decide on and say, ‘Actually no that’s not going to be the case. You can’t do that on your own.’ It almost never gets to that, but we are this single-entity structure for better or worse, and I think the positives outweigh the negatives in general.”
