With a dramatic winning goal in stoppage time, Sounders FC’s Jeff Parke was clearly the player of the game Saturday against Sporting Kansas City. On Monday, he was voted MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) becoming the first defender to win the award since Week 22 of the 2009 season (Chad Marshall, Columbus).
It was Parke’s first goal since his rookie season in 2004, when he scored for the MetroStars in the June 12 game against San Jose. He also contributed to the shutout of Sporting KC in the 1-0 win.
Parke is the first Sounder to win the award this season, narrowly beating Philadelphia’s Carlos Ruiz for this week’s honors.
