Sounders GM Hanauer: There’s “not much” to Dudek rumor

UPDATE 1:05 p.m. — Here’s the response to the rumor from Sounders FC general manager Adrian Hanauer earlier today:

(What can you offer on the Jerzy Dudek rumor?) “Good goalkeeper, and something certainly we’re looking at for next year. We obviously have to figure out whether it’s one of our guys or someone else that we’re bringing in. But unless Chris (Henderson) is moonlighting by flying to Poland, there’s not much to this.”

(The report possibly mentioned an offer?) “Maybe someone made an offer on our behalf that we don’t know about, but I definitely didn’t make an offer to Dudek.”

(So your quote was “something” and not “someone” we’re looking at, right?) “Correct. We know that Kasey is retiring and we need a No. 1. Whether it comes from our ranks or outside our ranks, we’re definitely paying attention and that’s a focus for us at this time.”

* * *

Normally I don’t put a lot of stock into transfers rumors. It’s almost impossible to keep track of it all. But I start to pay attention when the league website passes along a Polish report supposedly saying former Real Madrid and Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek has received a contract offer from Sounders FC.

Certainly any link involving a goalkeeper makes sense considering Kasey Keller‘s expected retirement at the end of the 2011 MLS season. At 38 years old, Dudek is pretty familiar name — at least one I recognized — so that adds intrigue as well.

Obviously there are a lot of steps between reportedly receiving an offer and signing a deal.

Training starts soon, so I’ll try to get more information then.
