Servando Carrasco’s connection to the Women’s World Cup

carrasco mug.jpgNot long ago Sports Illustrated senior writer Grant Wahl spilled the beans to his near-100,000 Twitter followers that Sounders FC rookie Servando Carrasco is dating U.S. women’s national team forward Alex Morgan. (Not like it was a military-grade secret or anything…)

Morgan, who plays for the Western New York Flash of the WPS, is on the U.S. roster for the FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer in Germany.

When I was working on this Carrasco feature not long ago, I asked him about it. I was going to bring this up closer to the World Cup, but it seems timely enough now.

(I’ve heard you’re dating Alex Morgan, is that something you mind talking about as she gets ready for the World Cup this summer?) “No, that’s fine. I get that all the time. We’ve been dating since our freshman year at Cal. We’ve been together for three-and-a-half years — maybe even more. She’s going through an incredible phase in her life. She’s on a World Cup roster, which is an amazing accomplishment at her age of 21. It sucks that we’re on totally opposite on United States. She’s in Buffalo and I’m in Seattle. Skype has been the glue of our relationship. She’s been here a couple times. She’s come to Seattle twice and might come up before she leaves for Germany. She’s doing her thing and I’m doing my thing. The good thing is we’re in the same lifestyle. It’s OK if we don’t talk to each other until 6-7 o’ clock — if she’s been practicing or had something to do with the team. That’s always good; we can relate to each other.”
