Steve Zakuani feeling the best that he has since April 22

UPDATE 12:55 p.m. — Here is some video from Sounders FC

Today marked the first group interview Sounders FC midfielder Steve Zakuani has had with the media since having his leg broken in an April 22 game in Colorado.

Walking now with the aid of a single crutch, Zakuani fielded questions for about 13-14 minutes after a short workout at Starfire and said he’s feeling better than he ever has. He said he hasn’t spoken with Brian Mullan, the Rapids midfielder who committed the foul. Mullan reached out to Zakuani a couple times, but the timing didn’t work out.

Zakuani has forgiven Mullan for the tackle and added nothing really needs to be said.

Focused now on getting back on the field, Zakuani said he could start jogging at the end of July. He doesn’t want to set a timetable because he doesn’t want to allow himself to be disappointed if he’s behind schedule.

He acknowledged support from teammates, coaches, fans and team staff for helping him throughout this process. Zakuani also singled out words of encouragement from David Beckham and Seahawks wide receiver Deon Butler (who broke his leg in December).

I’ll have more from Zakuani’s group interview soon.
