UPDATE 3:20 p.m. — As expected, Sounders FC will host the winner of this game in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup. Here’s the link with the possible match-ups.
For the second-straight year, the Kitsap Pumas have advanced to the second round of the U.S. Open Cup. The local PDL side had to go through penalty kicks Tuesday night to do so, besting the Chivas El Paso Patriots 6-5 in a nine-round shootout after scoreless draw on the road.
Kitsap hosts the Real Colorado Foxes in a second-round game at 7 p.m. on June 21 (next Tuesday) at Bremerton Memorial Stadium. Tickets go on sale at 2 p.m. today through www.brownpapertickets.com. Coached by Pete Fewing, the Pumas could potentially face Sounders FC in the third round.
Of the 16 first-round games, Kitsap was the only team to win via shootout. Only two others won on the road.
Nik Besagno, Elliott Fauske, Mark Lee, Dave Gray and Steve Mohn all converted PKs in the shootout and rookie forward Bryan Burke converted the clincher. Rookie goalkeeper Zac Lubin earned the shutout filling in for the injured Bryan Meredith. Drafted by Sounders FC, Meredith has an ankle injury that might keep him out a couple weeks.
