FINAL: Sounders FC 1, Toronto FC 0, game thread

This was the first win for Seattle (6-4-7) while playing down a man, ever, and jumps the team into a tie for second in points. FC Dallas also has 25 points; only Los Angeles has more with 31. Fredy Montero snapped a 566-minute scoring drought if my math is correct.

* * *

FINAL. Sounders FC 1, Toronto FC 0. One moment of magic from Fredy Montero gives the 10-man Sounders a huge road win.

90+3′: Cordon with a yellow card after fouling Rosales. More seconds tick off. More time wasting.

90+2′: Four minutes of stoppage time. We’re almost halfway through ’em.

90′: GOAL SEATTLE! And it’s Fredy Montero curling in a beautiful free kick past Frei. Can the 10-man Sounders hold on for a huge win?

89′: More good stuff from the Sounders. Rosales clattered into 25 yards out. Montero and Alonso line up a free kick.

88′: Tense final minutes. Seattle able to waste time by winning throw-ins and fouls.

Good chance for the Sounders after Friberg finds Flaco in the box. The cutback to Montero is cleared, but possession is maintained in Toronto’s end.

86′: Wahl earns a corner kick well. Allows more seconds to tick off, plus a possibly chance on goal. Scott header back to Rosales. Alonso with a strong shot, but it’s wide.

84′: Sounders slow things down after winning a throw-in. TFC gets a counter-attack chance through. Montero defends well and the cross is taken by Keller.

82′: POST! Javier Martina open on the far post but slams a shot off the frame. Rebound chance no good either. We play on. Wow.

81′: Plata with a good run, but Parke defends it well.

80′: These final 10 minutes, plus stoppage time, will be long ones.

78′: Martina cross finds Santos, but his header is off line. Evans with an ankle contusion says the Sounders FC broadcast.

77′: Alonso nearly finds Rosales on a through ball. Seattle continues to get some attacking moments. On the other end, a shot comes in from Santos, but it’s off target.

76′: Header comes in from Soolsma, but Keller handles it comfortably.

75′: Friberg and Fernandez should be nice additions to a short-handed team. Rosales fouls a defender on a breakaway chance.

74′: Hang-on time for the Sounders. Alonso earns a corner kick with some nice work. It’s taken short and Alonso fires a low shot, but Frei handles it. Toronto’s young goalkeeper hasn’t been called upon much tonight.

71′: Evans might’ve tweaked something on that shot attempt. Signals for a sub. Friberg replaces him. That’s the last sub for Seattle. Martina in for TFC, replacing Stevanovic.

69′: Sounders actually playing pretty well down a man. Fernandez finally in for Fucito.

67′: Sounds like Fernandez will be coming in for Fucito. Friberg was up just in case Evans couldn’t play on, but he has.

65′: Montero strips Yourassowsky, then is fouled by the TFC player from behind. Yellow card to Yourassowsky, could’ve had one for diving earlier. Rosales cross blocked.

63′: Rosales corner kick eventually leads to a shot by Evans. He stays down after the attempt. Looks like Fernandez might be coming in soon. Friberg too possibly.

60′: Fucito wins a header well on a Montero cross, but it’s just over.

58′: Big defensive play by Evans after a Montero giveaway.

56′: Plata burns Riley, his cross across the goal is cleared by Wahl. Dangerous moment there.

55′: Wahl sends in a free kick, but it’s cleared.

52′: Zach Scott on to play center back. Lamar Neagle comes off. Fucito starts out on the left.

49′: RED CARD! Hurtado sent off for a second yellow card after dragging Stevanovic down. Somewhat harsh, but not entirely undeserved. Took a bad touch and grabbed his opponent down on the way to ground.

48′: Good stuff early from the Sounders.

46′: We’re underway in the second half. Certainly seems like there are goals out there to be had. We’ll see.

TFC made a switch. Cordon on for Sturgis.

Halftime: Sounders FC 0, Toronto FC 0. Reyes actually waited 3+ minutes before blowing the whistle. TFC with the better of the action at home. When does Alvaro Fernandez come in for Seattle?

45′: Two minutes of stoppage time.

45′: Plata with a run at Riley, cuts back and fires a shot wide.

43′: Sounders continue to play with fire. Alonso concedes a dangerous free kick this time. Shot by Sturgis is just high, clips the back netting.

40′: Replays show Yourassowsky with a ridiculous dive there. Later Toronto with a dangerous cross, but Montero helps defend. Home team with the better of the action on the whole.

38: Looks like Fucito took a hard hit while clearing the corner kick. Jaqua and Noonan warming up. On the corner kick, Santos heads Sturgis’ cross over the goal.

36′: Good build-up for Toronto leads to a Plata shot, but it’s blocked out for a corner. Sturgis service cleared, but not far enough. Another cross takes a deflection and Keller knocks it out. Fucito is down.

35′: Hurtado with a foul outside the box, earns a booking. Dangerous free kick coming. It’s blocked by the wall and cleared.

34′: Schmid laments Fucito’s early missed chance in his in-game interview. Says Montero needs to cover better defensively when given free reign. Also said Montero wanted a sleeve from the bench, it’s something they’ll check out at halftime.

31′: Yourassowsky with a shot wide. On the other end, Montero sets up Rosales for a cross, but it’s off target.

29′: Shaky moment in the back, but Parke and Keller combine to clear a dangerous ball. Then Santos draws a foul on Montero. Free kick taken by Sturgis, but Hurtado wins it.

27′: Wahl curls in the free kick, Hurtado wins it, but knocks it over the goal. Took a deflection. Out for a corner kick. Good service from Wahl, but it’s cleared.

26′: Borman booked for taking over Rosales. Two yellow cards now for TFC defenders.

24′: Rosales with another cross, but it’s over everyone.

22′: Cross comes into Santos, but it’s right at Keller.

21′: It’ll be interesting to see how many minutes Alvaro Fernandez has in him today.

18′: TFC earns its second corner kick, better service from Sturgis and ball is popped up. Harden smashes into Keller on the second attempt and draws a foul. Lots of Sounders take exception to that one, especially Riley. Keller stays down. Harden booked.

16′: Montero takes down Sturgis. Gets him back for the earlier foul.

15′: Alonso with the steal and a long shot attempt, but it’s well off target.

13′: Plata with a good run into the box past Parke but Alonso clears the danger for a corner kick. Sturgis’ cross is too long.

11′: Yourassowsky down in the penalty box after beating Riley. No call. Hurtado, the closest defender, pleads for a yellow card for simulation.

10′: Alonso earns a free kick, but Rosales’ service is over everyone and out for a goal kick.

8′: Good combo by Rosales and Riley, but the cross is blocked.

7′: Hurtado concedes a free kick. Riley blocks it and it’s cleared.

5′: Lot of empty seats there at BMO Field.

2′: POST! Lamar Neagle with a quick throw-in springs Fucito, who fires a left-footed shot that clips the far post. Tough angle.

2′: Montero active early defensively. Also draws a foul on Sturgis, an old teammate. Gets up gingerly.

1′: We’re underway!
