A stop and chat with Kitsap goalkeeper Bryan Meredith

meredith mug.jpgBryan Meredith didn’t make Sounders FC’s final roster after being selected in the second round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, but the young goalkeeper hasn’t been far from the team. Signed with the Kitsap Pumas, he still trains with the MLS side a couple days a week. On Tuesday, he had six saves in a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Seattle in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup. I caught with Meredith a couple days ago for a little chat:

* * *

(Did I hear your dad was in town for the game?) “Yeah, he was in town until (Thursday).”

(And then you had to play again Wednesday?) “I kind of had to. The other goalie got a red card last game. There weren’t many options.”

(What was playing in a competitive game against the Sounders like?) “It was exciting, but it was nothing I hadn’t played in front of before. It was definitely an opportunity to show what I can do and show myself in a little different light, I guess.”

(How much was it on your mind that these guys — e.g. Schmid — are watching?) “Not much. I’m here practicing a couple days a week so it’s not like it was the first time I was playing in front of them.”

(Do you think playing with these guys made it any easier for you?) “In some ways, yeah. I’ve seen them day in and day out, but at the same time they’ve seen me everyday. It’s the same thing.”

(Pete Fewing said you might’ve been a bit nervous playing in front of Sounders FC executives in the previous round against Colorado? What do you think?) “No, I think it was just rust. Honestly. It was my first game back (from my ankle injury). I had trained the day before, but I barely did anything. It was really my first game back. So really the first 25-30 minutes was really just getting back into the rhythm of things.”

(What do you make of your time so far with Kitsap?) “I’ve definitely enjoyed it a lot. I love the coaching staff. I love all the guys on the team as well. We’ve all gelled together really nicely. It’s been good. I think I’ve developed as well. It’s been good to get games instead of just training everyday. It’s been good.”
