In the community: South Sound Soccer Sunday coming up

It should be a fun day of soccer Sunday out at Curtis High School in University Place. They’re calling it South Sound Soccer Sunday. The Sounders Women kick off a doubleheader at 1 p.m. with a W-League game against the Colorado Force. Then the Tacoma Tide play a friendly against English club Port Vale FC at 4 p.m.

“We are very excited to be bringing this event to the greater Tacoma area,” said Tide owner Mike Jennings in a news release. “First fans will get to see the highest level of women’s soccer in the Northwest, and then they will see what we believe is a first for our community…an international friendly with a historic English club taking on our hometown side.”

The Port Vale FC staff will also hold a two-hour coaches clinic Saturday at the Washington Premier FC Field Complex. The clinic is open to all coaches and costs $40 (which includes a ticket to the double-header Sunday. Register at www.TacomaFC.com.

Tacoma (1-10-4) played to a 1-1 tie against Abbotsford in PDL action Sunday.

— The Sounders Women beat the Santa Clarita Blue Heat 1-0 on Sunday on a penalty kick by Sophie Reiser.

— The Kitsap Pumas have signed Danish midfielder Mark Tubaek to a two-year deal. Tubeak, 22, has played in the Danish Second Division and is expected to be eligible once the transfer window opens on July 15.

Kitsap (10-0-3) clinched the Northwest Division championship after playing Washington Crossfire to a draw Saturday. The team recently sold Cameron Hepple to Albanian club KF Tirana, which has qualified for the UEFA Europa League.

Here’s an update on some standout Washington Youth Soccer teams.

— Sounders FC and The UPS Store have partnered to hold a book drive this week. Fans are encouraged to bring books to Saturday’s home game against Colorado. Monetary donations will be accepted as well with all the proceeds going to Toys for Tots Literacy Program. Donations will also be accepted at The UPS Store locations this week.

The Sounders and SUBWAY will host a Family Fitness Night on July 21 from 6-8 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club in Tacoma (1620 South 17th Street).
