Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid quotes from Saturday

schmid mug.jpgHere are some highlights from today’s group interview…

* * *

(On what the 7-0 drubbing did to the team mentally…) “I think we’re going to show our character when we go down to Panama on Tuesday and when we go into Houston. I think we’ll show what we’re made of. Looking at it again — it sounds stupid to say — but it’s like five bad minutes. Outside of that we had some good opportunities. The key for us now is to show what we’re made of and show what we’re all about. I’m confident we’re going to go into the game down in Panama and into the game in Houston and show exactly what we’re all about.”

(Any concerns about the hot weather?) “Lots of water. Lots of Gatorade. Lots of liquids. It’ll be good. It’s a situation where both the games are at night, and it obviously cools down at night. Playing in the heat and humidity is something that’ll be different for us, but it’s a challenge we’ve faced before. We faced it last year and we were able to come through it.”

(Any sense of wanting to redeem yourself in the CCL?) “Yeah, certainly we’d like to do better in the Champions League than we did last year. I think it was a good learning experience for us. I thought we were a little unfortunate, especially when we got to the group stage having to play two of our first three on the road. That made it difficult for us. Again, we’ve got the win the play-in games to get into the group stage and we have to acquit ourselves better than we did last year.”

(Injury updates?) “Hurtado is obviously still out with his MCL. Evans will not be going with us to Panama. Wahl is OK.”

(And White?) “White came through OK, but he’s also not going to Panama. We’re going to keep him here and keep him training, but he’s getting very close.”

(Logistics of trip…) “We’re going down to Panama with 20 players and we’ll take those 20 to Houston. Obviously if something happens, if there’s an injury or something like that, we might trade out or swap out a player or two. We’re taking a couple extras so hopefully it won’t come to that.”

(Can you field your best lineup in both games?) “Yeah. We should be OK fitness-wise. We’ve taken a few days off and so far that’s been good. Now it’s just a matter of getting ready to do the work for this next part of the schedule.”

(On Estrada at right back…) “It was a little bit on the night because … Evans was probably going to finish up at right back. But it’s something that we’ve experimented a couple times with at practice already. I thought actually he did alright.”
