Sounders sign 19-year-old Gambian Amadou Sanyang

sanyang.jpgSounders FC has been relatively quiet on the transaction front for months.

Even the first two weeks of the summer transfer window passed without incident.

The first bit of activity came Saturday when the team announced the signing of Amadou Sanyang, a 19-year-old Gambian who can play both midfielder and defender. Sanyang, who turns 20 on Monday, most recently played for Toronto FC.

“Positionally, Amadou is a good fit for us because he can play either central midfield or in the back,” said coach Sigi Schmid in a news release. “He’s a good passer, a good defender, and he can cover a lot of ground.”

TFC released Sanyang in December and he was been a free agent ever since.

Sanyang, who has experience with Gambian youth national teams, has been with the Sounders for a few weeks but his presence has been a little hush-hush, perhaps as the team worked to get him on their discovery list. Most recently I saw him practice as a center midfielder. Expect him to provide depth and versatility as a young prospect.
