Schmid on the transfer window: “We really haven’t had that really consistent goal-scorer per se. We’re looking for that.”

schmid mug.jpgSounders FC coach Sigi Schmid took a couple questions before the upcoming close of the international transfer window. Take a look:

* * *

(On needing to add someone in the transfer window…) “We’re always looking. We’re always looking and following up on things and pursuing things. Sometimes in the transfer window some things will succeed and some things won’t succeed. You never know. I’ve seen things blow up at the 11th hour in the 59th minute at 59 seconds, and sometimes you get things in place early and they go very smoothly. The window (closes Sunday night) and all I can tell you is we’re always looking to improve our team if we can.”

(Where do you think this team could use help?) “I think you’re looking at this year and you’re looking at the future as well. Obviously we really haven’t had that really consistent goal-scorer per se. We’re looking for that. We’ve had different people come in and chip in. Roger Levesque’s gotten goals and Fredy’s gotten goals. We’ve gotten goals out of midfield, which is a good thing, but that might be something that’s there. Sometimes it’s a situation, too, of somebody becomes available to you that you don’t necessarily expect. So maybe it’s not the position that you’re searching for but the quality of the individual player is so great that you say, ‘OK, maybe this is a good move for us because it makes us stronger.’ You seek and you look for different things, you try to find certain things, but sometimes things become available to you. I think Mauro is a good example of that. Before the season were we necessarily looking for a winger, when we already had Fernandez and Steve Zakuani? Not necessarily, but he became available and he was of such quality when we saw him train that we said, ‘Wait a minute. It would be a mistake to bypass this guy. He’s going to make us stronger.”
