Sounders FC acquires Sammy Ochoa through allocation

Sounders FC traded up in the allocation order to acquire forward Sammy Ochoa. The 24-year-old played for coach Sigi Schmid with the U.S. U-20 team and impressed in tryout here in Seattle earlier this summer.

The Sounders was ranked No. 6 in the allocation order but sent a third-round pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft to Chicago to move up to No. 4 to acquire Ochoa.

“We’re happy to have Sammy join our team because it gives us a little more depth at forward,” said Schmid. “He did well when he was here on his trial. Now it’s just a matter of getting him fit and getting his game legs and he could help us.”

Here’s a video of the goal Ochoa scored with the Sounders’ reserves earlier this season, the only score in a 1-0 win against the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Ochoa signed with the league earlier this week after spending the past five years at Mexico’s Estudiantes Tecos in Guadalajara.

“He’s a good back-to-goal player,” Schmid said. “He’s a good finisher around the box. Those are qualities that he’s had. All his time in Mexico, he was in and out of the lineup so much. I forget how many years he was down there in total. In (five years) he probably had 12 head coaches. So it’s tough to establish a rhythm.”
