Today marks the MLS roster freeze, meaning all player signings, trades, and transactions must be completed by 2 p.m. After the deadline has passed, no moves can be made until after the MLS Cup.
Sometimes transactions are announced a day after they’ve been finalized, so it’s possible some news will leak into Friday.
And the freeze isn’t without a little wiggle room:
Teams may add short term replacements after the roster freeze date in cases of extreme hardship. In the event a team calls up a player, including League Pool Goalkeepers, during the MLS Cup Playoffs and the player appears in a game, he will be tied to that team for the remainder of the playoffs and MLS Cup. If he is called up but does not play, then he is not tied to that team.
Sounders FC isn’t expected to make a major move as coach Sigi Schmid said on a conference call Monday that his team is pretty much set. Seattle is stretched to the limit when it comes to the salary budget and roster space.
