A stop and chat with your newest Sounder, Bryan Meredith

meredith mug.jpgSounders FC signed Bryan Meredith, 22, earlier this week to fill out depth at goalkeeper following the news that Terry Boss (concussion) would be out for the season. Seattle selected Meredith in the second round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft back in January. When he didn’t make the cut for the start of the season, Meredith played for the Kitsap Pumas of the USL Premier Development League and often trained with the Sounders throughout the week.

(It might’ve taken eight months longer than you’d have wanted, but how does it feel?) “It was exciting. I wouldn’t change the way it happened. I was definitely able to train this whole summer and get a lot of games in. I got a lot of game experience and also trained with the team. … Obviously the decision to stick around here paid off.”

(What kind of reception did you get from the guys today?) “Normal. They’re like, ‘You’re back again, huh?’ (laughs) No, it was a warm welcome for sure.”

(So were you in class when you got the call?) “No, I wasn’t in class. I was just back in Monmouth in school. I was thinking, ‘OK, sure. Why not?’ ”

(On making the decision to leave school…) “I think when I get an opportunity like this, I’m not going to be able to turn it down, for sure. It’s been my dream since I was 8 years old so I can’t turn it down.”

(On relationship with Josh Ford…) “I think definitely as rookie goalkeepers going through the same thing, we kind of were there for each other to pick each other up when maybe one of us were having a bad day — just saying, ‘Go get ’em next time.’ We definitely have a good relationship and I’m happy that we do, because it would’ve been a pain in the (butt) having to live with him in the preseason if we didn’t. We’re really good friends and the relationship’s just going to get better.”

(And still competing, right?) “Oh, of course. I’m sure he looks forward to it, too. Competition is a healthy thing. It makes everybody around it better. I welcome it and know he feels the same way.”

(Did the Sounders give any implications beyond this season?) “No, no. I mean there’s an option, but anything past this season is up in the air. Just wait until after preseason.”

(So are you crashing on someone’s couch now?) “I’m living with Seamon and Lamar. I was over there almost everyday anyway.”
