Marcus Hahnemann signs short-term deal with Everton

Seattle native Marcus Hahnemann has signed a short-term deal with Everton through January, a move that seemingly keeps all his options open for joining MLS for next season.

The 39-year-old goalkeeper has been out of contract and will back up fellow American Tim Howard at the English Premier League club.

Hahnemann has long been thought of as a natural replacement for Sounders FC goalkeeper Kasey Keller, who has announced he’ll retire at the end of this season. Earlier this year, general manager Adrian Hanauer said the team has discussed possibilities with Hahnemann but is restricted in acquiring him due to MLS rules on returning national-team players — the allocation process.

Coach Sigi Schmid has also talked about the issue this year.

Hahnemann went to high school in the area and won a national championship with Seattle Pacific in 1993. He also played for the A-League Sounders and then in MLS before heading off to England. Hahnemann hasn’t played in a while, so this new deal with Everton could get him sharp before an expected return to the league.

Any thoughts on the minor development?
