The inside of BC Place and Polytan surface look great

I had a chance to check out the inside of BC Place this weekend while in Vancouver, B.C., for the Sounders-Whitecaps game. Final stages of renovations were still under way, but it was clear that the stadium won’t have anyone longing for Empire Field.

The BC Lions of the Canadian Football League will actually have the first game there, hosting Edmonton at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Two days later, the Portland Timbers come to town for the first MLS game at BC Place.

Here is some information on the Whitecaps’ website on the new venue, with information on the retractable roof, an impressive video screen (second largest in North America to the one in Cowboys Stadium) and a new Polytan Ligaturf 240 RS+ all-weather turf field — the best artificial surface I’ve seen.

Capacity at the 54,500-seat venue is expected to be around 21,500 for soccer games.

Now to the pictures…

1. Everything was shiny and new. I look forward to a return trip.

2. Here’s that video screen. The largest side is 68 feet by 38 feet.

3. Soccer folk will be most excited for the new Polytan artificial surface. You can check out the company’s website and some venues where it’s used around the world.

4. Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi has called Polytan like “a lush grass field.”
