KC’s Sapong voted top rookie, fair play winners announced

MLS Logo.jpgSporting Kansas City forward C.J. Sapong was a runaway winner for MLS Rookie of the Year. He got my vote and was the top pick by the media (41.99 percent), the clubs (34.04 percent) and the players (30.25 percent).

Sapong played in all 34 of Sporting KC’s games this season and his five goals were tied with Houston’s Will Bruin for the most by a rookie.

D.C. United defender Perry Kitchen finished second and Philadelphia’s Michael Farfan was third. Portland’s Darlington Nagbe and Bruin round out the top five.

Fair Play winners were also announced by MLS on Tuesday. Former Sounder Sebastien Le Toux, now a Union forward, won the individual award for the second year in a row. The Portland Timbers won the team award.

Le Toux committed just 20 fouls and didn’t receive any cards or supplementary discipline this season. The Timbers committed a league-low 347 fouls this season and were one of just five teams to average under 1.5 yellow cards per game. Portland’s three red cards were tied for second fewest behind Sounders FC’s total of two.
