Sounders will exercise Erik Friberg’s contract option for 2012

friberg mug.jpgI won’t pretend to know much Swedish, but I saw this article regarding Sounders FC’s Erik Friberg make the rounds on Twitter this afternoon.

Internet translations can be risky, so I contacted general manager Adrian Hanauer to ask about the midfielder’s status for next year.

In an email, Hanauer said the team will be exercising Friberg’s contract option for the 2012 season. They expect the 25-year-old Swede to come back, but will be speaking more with him in the next few weeks.

Here’s an earlier article in Swedish suggesting that Friberg’s contract was for the 2011 season with team options for 2012 and 2013. The versatile midfielder played in 26 league games this season (starting 23) and had a goal and two assists. In all competitions he played in 34 games, making 29 starts.

What do you think of the move to retain Friberg?
